Book Review by Shiny Ajit – Premraj K K’s Novel Ormmayiloru Vasantham

Ormayil oru Vasantham

Malayalam Novel

This story revolves around deep relationships and the innocent love of a bygone era, taking us back to a time that the modern generation may not fully understand. It’s set in a parallel college environment that stands apart from the modern era and other colleges. This institution attracts children from average or less affluent families who aspire to pursue their dreams, providing an atmosphere where learning is prioritized and dedicated teachers thrive.

Author Premraj KK weaves this narrative from his keen observations and experiences. He magically transports readers 30 to 40 years into the past, intertwining that era with the present generation.

At the heart of the story is Prakash, who, while lying in his hospital bed, reflects on the golden days of his past—an era that many of us cherish. The narrative begins when Prakash awakens from the ICU, triggering memories of the pivotal moments in his life. At that moment, he starts to recognize the love and care of his neighbours, prompting us to consider whether we truly appreciate and nurture those around us.

The story gradually contrasts the fast-paced culture of WhatsApp and social media. In today’s world, our lives are often laid bare for public scrutiny, and the opinions we encounter can significantly influence our paths. As we delve deeper into the book, it reveals both the positive and negative aspects of WhatsApp and how it impacts personal lives. Following his discharge from the hospital, Prakash finds himself at a crossroads: having lost his job and uncertain about his future. However, his passion for writing and strong willpower led him to redirect his life toward his true calling.

This narrative resonates with today’s youth, many of whom struggle during critical junctures in their lives and feel isolated without support. Tragically, some choose to end their lives in moments of despair. This raises a vital question: What is lacking in this generation? Emotions such as love, care, and reliable companionship appear to be increasingly endangered.

Upon returning home from the hospital, Prakash’s only source of financial support comes from his childhood love and friend, who offers help without hesitation. This highlights a harsh reality: many modern relationships seem to be transactional, where financial stability often dictates the level of connection. Phone calls diminish, and genuine smiles become rarer when money is tight.

Coming from a modest family, Prakash continued his education after completing 10th grade, eventually earning his degree. Throughout those five years, he formed a few genuine friendships characterized by mutual support without selfishness. This bond is a recurring theme in the story.

Looking back at Premraj’s previous novels and short story collections, one notices that they reflect the realities of our society. The narratives often illustrate that no one truly values others when climbing the social ladder. Individuals may use friendship to exploit others, only to don a facade of goodwill in society. Those who dare to unveil this deception are often labelled troublemakers. With great courage, I encourage you to highlight these injustices through your words.
