Premraj K K’s latest collection of short stories in English, it is called “Light of a Lantern” . It cincludes 30 short stories.  It is an English translation of the narrator’s earlier stories. The author has translated it and  published by Ukiyoto Publishers, Kolkata.

Brief of few stories:

The first story tells us about the importance of misunderstanding and   speaking to each other in a relationship. It take us to the village life which most of  us are not aware of . The life of a  villager, the innocence of village life ,without any grudge holding they  lead a peaceful and clam life . A small mistake or misunderstanding or overthinking can ruin one family. This story clearly tells us that we should no allow doubt to take up our mind, instead of that we need love and  trust .

In his second work, “Where the Birds Fly,” Shankunni uses a simple trick to explain the importance of sharing and caring. In today’s world, these qualities seem to be disappearing, yet humanity cannot survive without them. He also highlights how small words can create significant trouble, capable of piercing through others’ hearts. In his old age, Shankunni shares his house with 22 others who are alone at the end of their lives. Through his letters, we can sense the loneliness of the elderly and the increasing number of old age homes. He addresses the pathetic situation of government hospitals and the unnecessary interference from leaders and the media.

In the third story, “Colours of Life,” the author discusses the challenges of working from home. While it offers flexibility, it can also consume a person’s entire twenty-four hours with office work. In this story, he also highlights the difficulties faced by food delivery workers, reminding us that many of us tend to scold them if their deliveries are late. The author emphasizes the importance of showing respect and care for others. Nowadays, most of us may not take the time to understand what is happening in our neighbourhoods or while we travel. However, when we do take the effort to help others, we may find that a Good Samaritan will come to our aid when we need it most.

The Kamala story illustrates that love can happen to anyone, but without truly understanding our partner, we cannot define love. From the Cancun story, we gain valuable insight into the hidden struggles of a girl who was unable to see and, therefore, missed out on experiencing a colorful life. This story also touches on themes of friendship and hospitality.

The field of tulips reflects the scenic beauty of Kashmir and the lives of Kashmiri Pandits, capturing the pain experienced by husbands and brothers. A wide range of emotions arises as we engage with this narrative.

Much more to say about this collection, there are thirty short stories. Readers will enjoy this book very much.
