Meena Malani plays grandmother to Deeksha Rai

The much anticipated and eagerly awaited Kannada film, Pencil Box is all set for release this week. The film which is a entertainer is not only for school children but also is a family saga. Every individual will relate to the film as they will go nostalgic with memories of their childhood and school days as the kids here are full of fun, frolic, naughty and play pranks – entertaining the audience. The film also has a strong social message. The songs of the film are already a hit and has got a large number of views on youtube.

The film has Tulu comedians Arvind Bolar and Bhojraj Vamanjoor playing important roles while veteran Mangalorean actress Meena Malani also plays an important role in the film. She plays grandmother to the lead school girl Deeksha D Rai. As Meena has five major scenes in the film that of a concerned lady about her son, daughter in law and the little girl, she worries about the family and the education of the girl as the school girl gets admitted to a school in city. The problems that the very middle class family faces with sorrows and sentiments and how they overcome with joy and happiness is what the film is all about.

Pencil Box happens to be Meena Malani’s third Kannada film. She was earlier seen in SMS 6260 with actress Jayalakshmi and actor Dattanna;  and the award winning Sulige Sikkidaaga with Kalpana Pandit, both the films being directed by her son, South and Bollywood director Sandeep Malani.

The other noteworthy films of Meena Malani include September 8, Badhi and My Name is Annappa in Tulu; Bogsanhe and Kazaar in Konkani, Maa and the forthcoming Shakeela (by Indrajit Lankesh) in Hindi. She has also appeared in the Daijiworld Konkani serial Ee Vaat Sargachi.

Famous Mangalorean Konkani Stage and Cine actor and director Comedian Dolla Nandigudda is the brother of Meena Malani. And the brother sister duo will also be seen shaking a leg for a song in the forthcoming Konkani film Alshi Rede.Pencil Box is produced under the banner of Drishya Movies by Dayanand S Rai (who also plays a central character), Vinod Kumar and Satish Shetty. The movie is directed by Razaak Puttur. The film opens to cinema halls in Mangalore and other parts of South Kanara on November 29th. The week to follow it will be released all over Karnataka
